2012 Siebel Scholars Awards Announced

Five UCSD Bioengineering students have been awarded the prestigious Siebel Scholar fellowship for their exceptional research in bioengineering and improving human health. The Siebel Scholar annually awards $35,000 to outstanding Ph.D. students who are completing the last year of their graduate studies. This is the third year that UCSD has awarded the prestigious fellowship made possible by the Siebel Foundation.

The Institute of Engineering in Medicine worked with the Jacobs School of Engineering to administer the nomination and review of the award. The UCSD 2012 Siebel Scholars are:

Nathan Lewis Bioengineering Dr. Bernhard Palsson, Bioengineering

Their research encompasses tissue engineering, systems biology, anticancer nanomedicine, nano-motors, neurological disorders, and retinal prosthesis for the visually impaired.

The five Ph.D. Bioengineering students will join over 700 fellow Siebel Scholars at the annual Siebel Scholars Conference from October 14th to 16th at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Ashburn, Virginia. The Siebel Scholars program was founded in 2000 and has recognized the most talented students at the leading graduate schools across the world. The foundation was established by the software innovator and leading philanthropist Thomas Siebel.
