Elaine Tanaka

Assistant Clinical Professor, Surgery

Dr. Tanaka is a Board Certified general surgeon who has served patients and worked with fellow surgeons in the private/HMO, public (Veterans' Hospital) and academic sectors. Dr. Tanaka has been involved in multiple research projects for many years in a collaborative effort and partnership with two separate Engineering departments at UC San Diego.  These research projects are aimed at improving the long-term health of patients and physicians/health care professionals.  Dr. Tanaka has conducted research on the use of breast imaging by surgeons to care for patients with breast cancer. It is a multidisciplinary and national project involving two other investigators (Radiology) at MD Anderson and NYU.  She teaches both Medical Students and Residents, and recently won a teaching award.  She volunteers as a mentor for both UC Health Hack and SD Hacks competitions.
