Peter Mage of UC Santa Barbara wins the Falling Walls Lab San Diego
An overall 14 next generation scientists, entrepreneurs and academics came together at the Falling Walls Lab San Diego to share their innovative work with a high-caliber jury. The event was held on June 27th, 2015 and was hosted by the University of California, San Diego with the special support of the UC San Diego Institute of Engineering in Medicine.
Peter Mage of UC Santa Barbara won the first SoCal Lab and will present his work at the global Falling Walls Lab Finale on 8/9 November in Berlin. The event saw a wide array of very impressive presentations spanning the fields of Medicine, Lucid Dreaming, Socio-Economics, Computing and more.
Southern California’s winner will compete with others from around the world at the Falling Walls Lab Finale on November 8th in Berlin. The top three presenters at the Lab Finale are invited to present their concepts at the Falling Walls Conference the following day on November 9th. The three most intriguing presenters will be awarded the title “Falling Walls Young Innovator of the Year 2015”, will receive a cash prize and will get the opportunity to present their idea on the grand stage of the Falling Walls Conference on November 9th. This year, Prof. Bruce Beutler, Nobel Prize winner in Medicine, and Prof. Emmanuelle Charpentier, 2015 Breakthrough Price winner, are amongst the attending speakers.
The conference is held on the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall: a reminder of an epic historical moment which marked the fall of a physical barrier and above all the enlargement of the borders and the start of a new mingling of different cultures and peoples. An unprecedented moment which changed history. “What are the next walls to fall?”, this is the question to be answered by the contest candidates, doomed to make their mark. The initiative is aimed at convening open-minded and creative people, capable to think and prepare solutions also to everyday problems, to innovate and concretely enhance all fields of knowledge and activities, spanning from medicine to agriculture, from economics to humanities.

1st place: Peter Mage (USA), University of California, Santa Barbara - Breaking the Wall of Guesswork in Medicine
Peter is developing new ways of detecting and treating disease. He believes that closed-loop control of drugs in the body can enable precision therapy tailored to every patient. Peter aspires to create technologies that provide an insight into the biology of our bodies in real-time, thus making medical treatments smarter and more effective.
